High Commission of India

Dhaka

Remarks by the High Commissioner of India at the event to inaugurate the renovated dance floor and the library-cum-reading room of the Dance Department, Dhaka University

[Dance Department; May 18, 2017; 1200 hrs]

 E. Professor Dr A. A. M. S. Arefin Siddique,

Vice Chancellor, University of Dhaka;

Professor Rezwana Choudhury Bannya,

Head of Department, Dance Department;

Pro Vice Chancellors;

Distinguished Faculty Members;

Dear Students

Namaskar!

          This is not my first visit to Dhaka University. In fact, I have been here on several occasions, including a painting competition held in association with Dhaka University; commemoration of Vishwa Hindi Diwas; Bani Archana in the Jagannath Hall etc.

I have also attended many academic events like conference and seminars etc. in the Dhaka University.

It is always a pleasure for me to visit this prestigious centre of learning and academic excellence, and, especially to add value to the University’s activities and content through a stimulating programme of cooperation with India.

I wish to thank the Vice Chancellor for his consistent support and receptivity to our varied proposals for such cooperation.

Dhaka University also kindles in us Indians a sense of oneness and solidarity with your record of resistance against occupation and repression. The exemplary contribution made by the students and faculty members of Dhaka University for the cause of Liberation of Bangladesh will continue to inspire young minds.

I am very happy to be present here today when the renovated dance floor and reading room-cum-library hall of the Dance Department is being inaugurated.

This project was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Dhaka in June, 2015. The project work was started in November 2015.

I am very happy to see that the project has come to fruition today.

Reading room-cum-library hall named after ‘Uday Shankar’ symbolizes the close connections both the countries share in the sphere of art and culture. Uday Shankar was the pioneer of modern dance in India. With his family roots in Bangladesh, he attained great heights in his career. His work was critically acclaimed all over the world. The hall named after him will inspire the students to achieve similar success in their respective career.

The Dance Department is a relatively new department of the University and slowly gaining popularity among the students.

I appreciate the hard work and dedication of Professor Rezwana Chaudhury and other faculty members in setting up and running the Department.

Dance is the deeply ingrained part of our society in which we live. Refinement of dance form in India and Bangladesh is a manifestation of our shared civilization to which we belong.

I have always been amazed with the extent of dance as an expression of culture in Bangladesh. With the level of talent I see here, I am sure the future of a vital part of our common culture – dance as an art form, is very bright.

Taking the advantage of the presence of the Vice Chancellor, Pro Vice Chancellors, Head of Department, and, the distinguished faculty members, I would like to place on record that High Commission of India would provide more opportunities for the students of Dhaka University to study in India. We would also consider supporting their visit to India for their academic pursuits.

We can also consider visits of the students of the Dance Department to India for their performances and training etc. We will also consider inviting experts on request of the department for organizing workshops, seminars etc. Students of the department can also use the platform of Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre to showcase their talent.

We will remain supportive to the University of Dhaka. And our support, especially to the Dance; Music; Art; and, Hindi Department will continue.

I hope the inauguration of the new facilities in the Dance Department today will be very useful for the students to hone their skill and talent in their chosen field of art.

I wish that in coming years, under the guidance of Vice Chancellor, and, in the leadership of the Head of Department, Dance Department of the Dhaka University will get all success and prominence that it deserves.

I wish all the best to the students of the Department.

Namaskar!
